Please note: You need to download & have a basic understanding of the Data Manager script to follow this tutorial.

Download here:
http://bit.ly/1k5IlTw

p.s. You need a scraped library before you use the DataManager.

Concept

The new 52 is DC Comics' 2011 reboot of its entire line of ongoing monthly superhero books following the universe altering event, Flashpoint. This is a concept (www.comicvine.com/concepts/).

All the details about the various concept groups, waves & their current status can be found in these two sites:

www.comicvine.com/the-new-52/4015-56061/
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_New_52_publications

Wave

The books are released in 'waves'. DC has released a total of 78 ongoing titles across multiple "wave" releases, with 7 planned.

Group

The publications are divided into seven groups of titles, revolving around central characters or themes.
  • "Justice League": These titles feature characters related to the Justice League.
  • "Batman": These titles feature Batman and the "Batman Family" of characters.
  • "Superman": These titles feature Superman and the "Superman Family" of characters.
  • "Green Lantern": These titles feature the members of the Green Lantern Corps, as well as the other Lantern Corps of the emotional spectrum.
  • "Young Justice"These titles feature teen-aged characters and superhero teams.
  • "The Edge": These are titles with war, science fiction, western, or crime themes, and include titles and characters formerly belonging to the WildStorm imprint.
  • "The Dark": These are titles with supernatural, fantasy and horror themes, including titles and characters formerly belonging to the Vertigo imprint.

Status

Many titles have been canceled after completing a certian number of issues. We will denote their status as 'discontinued', while the others are, obviously, 'ongoing'.

Custom Fields

So, we make use of the custom fields, and make 4 new fields:
  • Concept
  • Concept Group
  • Concept Status
  • Concept Wave

Now, we need to make our rules in the DataManager to automate these custom field.

I've already done all the hard work & the rules are available to be downloaded here:

File Attachment:

File Name: DCNew52.zip
File Size:2 KB

Imoprt these rules in your DataManager & run it on your existing DC Comics, as well as on your 0-days every week.

To pull these books in your ComicRack, you only need a smart list like this:

Now, it's your choice as to how to group. I like to group them by Concept Groups.

Enjoy! :)

Thank you AGAIN.....you make ComicRack so much easier to understand for those of us not as familiar with the technical side of the application.

Thanks a lot for the kind words!

+1 karma for the appreciation by being the first (and only) person to reply... ;)

p.s. I'm also working (almost complete) on a similar organisation for Marvel NOW! books. Anybody interested?

For my New 52 books, I just labeled them with the imprint "DCNew."

Nice & easy, if you used the DataManager to do that. :)

Prior to the introduction of the custom fields, I also (mis)used the existing metadata fields to organize books (like you used the 'imprint' field here), but then the purist in me always cringed at that. But now, with custom fields, we can accomplish all this without any 'mislabelling'.

The scheme I've presented in this thread organizes all the DC New 52 books in less than a minute. Your books just need to be scraped.

Thanks for this, much easier. Wondering if you consider the Digital Firsts as part of the New 52?

I've checked with ComicVine, & I'm pretty sure that DC Digital Firsts are NOT a part of the new 52.

I finally imported this to my data manager. Love it. Thanks! I wish there was a shared repo we could use to keep these up to date. Same with smart lists. Oh well, maybe in ComicRack version 2.0.

Glad ye liked it! I'm working on organizing the (huge) Hellboy universe. Stay ready with scraped comics. :)

Hah! ComicRack 2.0? It hasn't reached even v1.0! It is a permanent Beta software. :silly:
