So, I've long wanted to read Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" - but have always found an excuse not to, for some reason.

I know there are many volumes/trades/specials, etc, and was curious if anyone here could share their opinion.

I'd like to get to a point where I'm ready for the new book that will come out this autumn, ideally

I thought it started out awesome and fizzled out towards the last few issues.
Definitely worth a read though, beautiful art in most of it too.

I started flipping through the first few issues, and didn't really find the artwork to my taste.
But, if I know my Gaiman, the storytelling will more than make up for it.
From what I've read, a lot of people say that Preludes and Nocturnes is below standard compared to the rest of the series... we'll see :)
