Let me start off by saying that I've been a VERY VERY late bloomer when it comes to embracing Green Lantern enough to warrant the character's existence let alone his deserving the focus of two or three ongoing series. I mean come on...you have a bearer who wears a green ring that allows said bearer to make solid objects from the ring (these were VERY stupid objects back in the early days of the character which meant to me that either the character, the writer, or both had no real imagination and ingenuity). Then to top off the silliness, the bearer has to re-energize the ring from a BIG ASS lame green lantern (seriously...a lantern?) while reciting a even more lame phrase (what is with DC and it's needed phrases to activate great powers ie Shazam anyway).

Now that I got that rant out of the way, I have to admit, that thanks to recent great writers of the past 5 to 10 years Green Lantern and the mythos surrounding the character have grown on me tremendously. Introduction of the other mood ring factions (for lack of a better term currently) has greatly added depth to this silly, old and stale corner of the DC cosmic universe. Even the new CGI animated series is based on these new factions and the first few episodes of the show is pretty darn good. Dare I say that it might be up there with that other more expensive CGI show that ends in Wars.

Thus, I have crossed over into the light...the green light, and felt that it's time a thread was dedicated to Lanterns and the great stories that have developed over the years making this once lame franchise quite cool and interesting (calm down my friends, this is just my personal opinion..no attacks please  )

First Green Lantern story arc up for discussion is Blackest Night. It is a nine part limited series which wraps up the masterful trilogy created by the awesome Geoff Johns. Plus you have artwork by the great Ivan Reis, which it's just great to see his work on mainstream characters since his beautiful artwork was first seen in the independent pages of Chaos! Comics. What makes the basics of this story arc so sweet to me is Geoff Johns devised a way to pit heroes against zombie versions of other heroes. That's pretty cool during these days of zombie story revivals.

Blackest Night involves Nekron, a personified force of death resurrecting deceased superheroes and seeking to eliminate all life and emotion from the universe. Blackest Night is a crossover event that ran for about 9 months starting at the end of 2009 and involved the main eponymous title and crossed over into many Blackest Night miniseries and main titles like Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, both Titans titles, and Justice League of America amongst others. Even long deceased titles were raised from the dead to join in the event such as Suicide Squad, Catwoman, Question & The Phantom Stranger.

Thanks for the list! I've yet to start reading this but I do plan on it! I'm enjoying the current run of Green Lantern but I plan on going back to the previous volume since it seems to carry on from what happened before.

@DarkSynopsis - No prob. It's been a while since I've read it myself. It's a great read. The story lines which were produced around that time set a higher level of story telling which were the precedence for the new 52 Green Lantern related titles.

@everyone - I updated the reading list to include these two additional issues:
  • Action Comics Vol 1 #890
  • Untold Tales of Blackest Night Vol 2010 #1
