I do not think that there can be one way of handling it that works well for number based western comics and volume based eastern.

How about an option to use Volumes as stacking criteria? Turn it on and you get series+volume stacks, turn it off and only series is used for stacking.

That does sound like a good idea, it would accommodate each preference. Would it be possible to get a similar setting for details after opening a stack? Turn volume display on and you get Series V1 #5 and when turned off you get Series #5 (off by default for western comics).

The solution in 1.69 will be as follows:

* Switch to include volume for stacks/groups (default is off)
* eComics in lists will display the volume when needed (e.g. all eComics of a certain series have the same volume -> no volume display).

1.69 is out.
I think stacking/grouping/volume implementation should now be fine.
Any thoughts?

Stacking/grouping is perfect as it is now. You did mention in the patch notes that volume display will appear when opening a stack, but this does not seem to be the case. I have stacking by series and after opening a stack, I use the detail display, which does not have the volume. Cover display mode does have the volume, however does not show the chapter title (hence I tend to use detail).

The volume only appears if it is needed in the current list. If the list contains comics with the same series but different volumes, the volumes will be displayed. if series AND volume is the same, no volume gets displayed.

This does not seem to function as intended. I currently have this in a stack ...

Tsubomi (Anthology) #8
Tsubomi (Anthology) #1
Tsubomi (Anthology) #3
Tsubomi (Anthology) #4
Tsubomi (Anthology) #5
Tsubomi (Anthology) #6
Tsubomi (Anthology) #1
...

This seems to be wrong. From your description, I would expect ...

Tsubomi (Anthology) V1 #8
Tsubomi (Anthology) V2 #1
Tsubomi (Anthology) V2 #3
Tsubomi (Anthology) V2 #4
Tsubomi (Anthology) V2 #5
Tsubomi (Anthology) V2 #6
Tsubomi (Anthology) V3 #1
...

When switching from Detail to Cover, I see the expected result. Changes do not affect detail mode?

Ah, I see.
You expect automatic assignment of the volume value. This is not the way it works.
You still have to give the book the correct volume value (either wit the filename e.g. "Tsubomi (Anthology) V1 #8", or with the editor (full version only) or with CRW and syncing them).

The volume information is available, both in the ComicInfo.xml file and in the file name.

Tsubomi (Anthology) V01 #008.cbz
Tsubomi (Anthology) V02 #001.cbz
Tsubomi (Anthology) V02 #002.cbz
Tsubomi (Anthology) V02 #003.cbz
Tsubomi (Anthology) V02 #004.cbz
Tsubomi (Anthology) V02 #005.cbz
Tsubomi (Anthology) V02 #006.cbz
Tsubomi (Anthology) V03 #001.cbz
...

Synchronized to the Android device (CRA full version) with 'Synchronize Devices'.

As I mentioned, 'Cover' display mode on CRA does show the volumes, 'Detail' does not.

Windows always shows the volumes.

So to sum up:

if "Volume differentiates series" is turned on you get 3 stacks (or series groups). If turned off, you only get one stack (and one series entry).

But

you never get the volume displayed for thumbnails?
