Book Description:
Chosen has been described in the British press as Spider-Man meets the Book of Revelations. SFX magazine describes it as Harry Potter for Christian fundamentalists.

Originally published as a three-issue series from Dark Horse as part of Millar's initial push of creator-owned Millarworld titles, the series followed the story of 12-year-old Jodie Christianson, who while growing up a regular Midwestern kid in the mid '80s discovers that he is, in fact, the returned Christ on earth. Millar and Gross will reteam for the two follow up volumes

Plot Summary:

Imagine you’re twelve years old and suddenly discover that you’re the returned Jesus Christ. You can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk again, and perhaps even raise the dead. What do you do, what does your family do, and how does it affect you knowing that you’re destined to grow up and take part in a conflict that people have been waiting almost two thousand years for?

I was a little hesitant posting this when it occurred to me that we've already read several Millar books this year but I just read this last month and really enjoyed it.

I think that Peter Gross and Jeanne McGee are an excellent tag-team with the watercolor artwork on this story especially since it's all Jodie just reminiscing about his childhood.

*Spoiler free review*

Hah! This is a good one, really good one. I read this a few years back & enjoyed it quite a lot. I am irreligious, so I don't care about anything. But, if any reader(s) here are deeply religious, they may get offended. So, beware.

This is a Millar story without all the grandiose, high-voltage, cinematic action. This is Millar at his most subtle, manipulating the readers at every point in the storyline, till he gives them a gut-punch in the end that would leave many reeling for quite some time.

I didn't like the art at all. But then, from what we saw from last reading club's Revolver, is that we can call this style of art 'undistracting'. Well, you decide for yourself.

Overall, this is book worth reading at least twice. So, I give it a straight 4 out of 5. Do read! :)

Being deeply anti-religious, this makes me eager to read :)600WPMPO wrote:

I enjoy Millar's over-the-top-ness (new word alert, patent pending)
But I am curious to see how he can pull off subtlety. Should be interesting

Oops, I forgot the poll but remembered the cover pics... (I was a few drinks in at the time) I'll post a poll soon.

As far as the artwork, you don't like painted art? I know it's not as fantastic as some (Fiona Staples for example) but if you've ever worked with watercolors you have to have a fairly minimalistic sketch for it to work out.

Finished it last night, you coulda told me it was multi-part! I thought the artwork was a bit retro - 70's or 80's?
I realy enjoyed it and didnt figure out the twist until the last 5 pages.. really good, whens part 2 coming out?

They've been saying they'll make a sequel called "Second Coming" since 5 years ago, lol.

It was out for about 4 years or more before they even said they wanted to make a sequel so I'd say just read it as a single shot mini-series. Of course G.R.R. Martin made people wait 11 years to find out what happened to their favorite characters over 2 sequels so who knows what Millar will do.
