Okay, so let's say that ComicRack is dead (I hope not!). What are the free and/or paid options that have the same features, awesome plugins, and great community?

There are no other options that are this complete and allow plugins for power users which is the main concern, if something breaks in the future we might be left with nothing this good.

Don't experience any real issues with CR or the Android app however new features are more than welcome, small annoying things like Android sync hanging now and again but nothing serious.
Heck had the same database with +1000 comics with no corruption for years.

Open sourcing it might have the downside of getting it divided up or even commercialized at some point.

I will put something out this weekend.
But do not expect too much.

There are thousands of people who rely on this software. If you are unable to keep up then let your baby flourish in the hands of others. GitHub.

Here are just a few of the benefits that may arise:
  • Crash fixes
  • Recode the base to a cross platform friendly language for Linux and OSX
  • Reworked modern user interface
  • Multi core / multi thread support
  • Full SQL database integration

+1

I don't know if it will be useful, but I will add my voice here.

I can fully understand that a developer who single-handly built something as sophisticated and successful as CR could be unwilling to let it go into other hands, but if I may make this comparison, look at Linus/Linux...

I too have some complains with CR, especially synchronization with my iPad handly works (the usual workaround is to reboot the iPad prior to sync, don't ask), and there are a lot of features that I would be very happy to have.

And like many, I feel that one day, CR will be unusable (Windows 10 or 11, iOS 9 or 10, RAR V5, you name it) and we will be left alone.

I hope cYo will see the benenit of finding a relay to move forward with CR, just like a parent let his child move on and prosper.

I would hate to see ComicRack fall into the hands of someone else. If Cyo was project manager, I could see something like that working where his vision is honored. Otherwise it isn't ComicRack. It's some other program.

I'm sad Cyo doesn't have time due to life/work, and wish there were more hours in the day for the poor guy.

I am not that concerned about vision. I am mostly concerned that cYo make an effort to clean the code for OpenSourcing it and then nobody picks up the development. It would be very, very frustrating.
On the other hand, If the software is not going to be updated anyway, maybe publishing its source as is could encourage someone to develop it, fork it or compete with it.
I realy do not know. :S

I hope I didn't sound too down on Comic Rack or its author in my post. I have two kids, 4 and 1 and when my first one came along it changed everything for me. Priorities got shifted and my free time was suddenly gone! If the Comic Rack author is spending his time with his kids rather than programming, then he is doing the right thing.

I doubt anyone will take this conversation the wrong way. If the guy is busy with life then thats just stuff that happens. It is equally possible the project could be picked up again in the future.

Whether a project ever goes 'open' is entirely down to the developer, but I could forsee problems with the Apple App Store if the project became less centrally organised or went down certain paths. That would be a concern for me.

It never stopped.
CR is just a very mature application and I'm quite happy with it :)

I have some small fixes already implemented and if I get the time I push the new version.
