Hi,

I tried to find a similar post but could not. If there is, please point me to it.

I recently embarked in the non-enviable task of organizing a large and messy collection. Everything was mind-numbing and dull as it should be, then suddenly became interesting. While in the "folder panel" I noticed that some folders were showing 0 files. Since my collection and file structure are very chaotic, I though the folders were indeed empty. The procedure I was following was CVSing the files, then LibraryOrganizing them. LO started to complain that most folders were not empty after moving the comics (I suspect it wanted to erase empty folder after the move). I assumed that these folders contained readmes and thumbs.db, etc and moved on. At some point I noticed that my collection had much more holes than it should. I checked in windows explorer and realized that CR was not seeing a lot of my comics. I tried to find a pattern but could not: file attributes, long names, short names, spaces in the name, special characters, folder structure, CBZ, CBR... it seemed to be occurring at random. Some folders were showing all the comics, some showing no comics at all, and others showing a fraction of them.

My setup is:
Windows XP running CR in one machine
Windows 7 hosting the files in another
the XP machine has mapped a network drive to the comics share.
I do not have rights in the windows 7 comp to install .net
I do not have space in the XP to copy my comics.
I had the idea of mapping and then confirmed here in the forums that some people have the same setup.

One test i did that added to my confusion was this:
I had a folder that had a file tree like this Z:\Image\Spawn (1992 series)\Spawn vol.1992 #3.cbz
I manually changed that to z:\spawn\spawn3.cbz and CR was able to see them. It worked with every issue! Then I tried to do the same with savage dragon... it did not work at all in
z:\savage\savage3.cbz

Is this known behavior? Am I doing something wrong? Can anybody shed some light into this matter? Is there something I can do to help diagnose the issue?

Could this be the zip engine (7zip) ?

try to create a zip of the structures you don't see in CR and see if you have any error...

Sorry, I do not think I understood the request.

Are you suggesting I try to zip whole folders in one single zip, or repack the individual problematic issues? I will try to do the latter.

Is Winrar ZIP engine known for causing this kind of trouble or just 7zip? Do I have to download another software to do the repack?

the same folders you have problems with, try to zip them with 7zip... winrar is not used.

I am sorry that my English understanding skills are not being good enough. Are you suggesting that I should use 7zip or that I should not use 7zip in this task?

mizio66 is suggesting that you SHOULD use 7zip.

Thanks a lot to mizio66 and Shinrai!

I recompressed the files and it worked

I did that with RAR, Winrar's ZIP and 7Zip's ZIP and every method worked.

It does not explain what happened when I renamed the file structure and filenames of the spawns and it worked too. Well, it matters little now since I can fix the issue.

With that established, does anyone knows a good tool to batch recompress? I know winrar can do that but only inside the same folder. It would be good to know one that you need only to enter the base path and it traverses the whole tree, recompressing inside each subdirectory.

Use Winrar.
Use the "Add to Archive..." in the contextual menu, after selecting 1 or more folders.
Then in the form appearing, choose ZIP compression in the General tab and then mark "insert file in single archive" (or similar, don't remember). This will create 1 zip for each folder. When you are satisied with the results, you can save this in a Profile and add it to the contextual menu (naming it Comics, e.g.) so that next time you just pick that and you will have sort of batch renaming...

Ciao
