Dear ComicRack Team,

there are some ways to make all JPEG inside a comic book smaller without losing picture quality.
Instead of converting JPEG to p.ex. WEBP where further quality is lost, you could also:

* use packJPG open source software - sources are available here:
www.elektronik.htw-aalen.de/packjpg/
compiled binary can be found here:
www.elektronik.htw-aalen.de/packjpg/bina...20v2.5f%20(LGPL).zip

* Use WinZip's ZIPX proprietary JPEG compresssion - sources are available here:
code.google.com/p/theunarchiver/source/b...DMaster%2FWinZipJPEG

What do you think?

Best regards,

Stephan

I'm not implementing a proprietary decoder.
Also the aalen stuff seems to promising but a little bit shaky (support wise).

So I fear you've to go the WebP way if you want to reduce your file sizes.

Hey, what does that mean, shaky support?

Anyways, I'm Matthias Stirner, the original developer of packJPG. I like ComicRack, so I'd also like to offer my support on this. While I wouldn't say that packJPG is as well tested as, say, JPEG itself, it still beats even recent commercial products in stability and compatibility. It is also actually used by commercial backup services due to it being released under the LGPL.

Bugs are still fixed when they come up (the most recent version is only a month old), but there hasn't anything come up that would be relevant in a real world scenario in years. The bottomline is: If you want to find / create a JPEG file incompatible with packJPG, you have to try very hard. In a real world scenario there should be none.

BTW: You may get the most recent version from here:

Almost a year and a half after the post above, do we have any follow-up on this topic? Seems very promising.
