Cyo,

The last week or so i've had this problem where comicrack is crashing shortly after loading it or while it's loading up. It isn't doing what it normally does (offering to send data out to you when it crashes) for some reason. I have had to remove and reinstall comicrack 2x now in the last week. I've had to have it rebuild my database 2x also (aside from rebuilding it when it first is reinstalled). Several times i've received blue screens while running it and the top of the bsod (i'm using vista so it's very odd to even see a bsod honestly) the primary error being reported is "Memory Management".

I'm running comicrack 9.11 on vista ultimate x64 version. I have the ghostwrite script (or whatever it's named) 64 bit version installed also. My system has 6 GB of ram and a 6GB page file also. My drives are all well and good and test fine. My ram is testing fine also. I have a very large database with slightly over 2TB of comics it loads (normally comicrack does use quite a bit of memory and mostly i assume that's due to the size of my database/comics it's loading up). Until 2 weeks ago honestly I haven't really been having any problems with comicrack and when I did have the occasional crash it was sending the data out to you in the normal method after a crash. Really finding it odd that it's not offering at all to send you data (understandable when it's the bsod that it is not able to do that but during the regular crashes it's only offering to report the problem with the application to microsoft for some reason).

Tonight I have had 8 crashes since 3pm, 1 bsod with the memory management error and i've had it force restore an older database earlier as it stated my database was corrupted after the 3rd crash earlier. This is only happening with comicrack and not with any of the other programs i'm running (so far). The fact that it's happening so frequently all of the sudden (and getting more and more frequent it seems) and the fact that it's not reporting this information normally as i've said made me stop into the forums to post about the errors so that you have a heads up and can give me some insight as to what you feel I should do to get the program working properly again and reporting back to you when it has errors as it should be doing.

Thanks for any help in advance

Today i'm seeing that I can't load comicrack at all. After several attempts and several almost immediate on load crashes i'm stuck. What's happening at this point is that I launch comicrack and it starts to load shows the application open completely with the splash page indicator bar getting about 90% completely loaded, at that point I get a windows error notification with the ability to send the data to microsoft but the applications built in reporting system doesn't load and offer to send the data here to you cyo. The error gives me the option to run a debugger (if selected it asks me to find and select the debugger program to use) and the option to close the application. If i select to have windows close the application it does nothing but whites out the window (gives me some foggy type of lame overlay is the best way to explain it) but doesn't actually close out the window for the application and i'm forced to go into the task manager and go to the services section and locate the comicrack.exe service listed (running at between 49-50% cpu and between 496-1600 megs of ram) and select end process to close out the window. I've tried to launch comicrack 5 times today and i've been thru the exact same process 5 times. I'm tempted to again remove and reinstall comicrack and readd my folders and then rescan and recreate my database (again) from scratch but the last two times i've done this it's not helped and within a few hours i'm receiving the same issues all over again.

I'm sure your very busy and I'm sorry to post such a lengthy post and then respond to it with pretty much the same information that was in the original post (this isn't an bumping attempt) although I felt maybe a better explaination as to what is going on was necessary for you to be able to decide what you feel I should try next.

Thank you again for any assistance in this matter.

Ok I removed comicrack (again) and then reinstalled it to a new location and so far I haven't crashed yet. I'll post again if the problems start up again. The 2 times i've uninstalled and reinstalled over the past few weeks i've been having issues after a reinstall I normally get a day or so before the problem starts up although I did install previously to the same drive the program resided on before. If this is due to a drive error (maybe?) then installing to a new drive (as I have) should fix that problem.

Ok doing a remove and reinstall didn't fix the problem (it did for several hours and then the issue has started up again). The first restart after the first crash restored an older database (saying that my database was corrupt). I went a good couple of hours before the next crash and then at that point it did the same thing, stated that the database was corrupt and had to be restored.

What can I do to re-enable the software crash reporting features of comicrack so that you are getting the actual crash data properly again?

Cyo,

Yesterday comicrack crashed numerous times (after i've done a clean install and while attempting to rescan in my comics). This morning after it crashed on it's first start of the new day I decided to open up my event logs to see if it's reporting any errors in that. I found this entry (and actually an entry for every crash that's happened over the last few days). All of the entries I have found so far for the past few days have had this text in the "General" tab of the vista event log:
Log Name: Application

Upon restarting it this morning A similar (but different) error occurred. The 2nd error this morning (recorded also in the vista event log) is as follows:

All the errors seem to involved the .net 2.0 mscorwks.dll, I will attempt to re-install the .net 2.0 runtime components and see if that fixes the error. This may well not be a comicrack error although comicrack is the application running that is trigging the error. As i'm not a coder I honestly don't know which is the actual cause of the problem (.Net 2.0 or Comicrack). If reinstalling the .net components fixes the issue i'll stop back and post of course.

Ok i think i've isolated the problem and I don't know that it's comicrack issue honestly. It seems that there were several files in my huge collection that were corrupted. Deleting those files and deleting my database and rebuilding the database from scratch seems to have resolved the issue with comicrack crashing. I haven't had a crash since finding and removing the corrupted comics files so i'm honestly not sure that comicrack is totally stable and fixed and i'm also not sure that it will send out the data as it used to if i do experience a crash. Not crashing is a very big plus for me at this point and i'll settle for what i get at the moment. If i do experience another crash and it doesn't send you the data on it cyo I will come back and post about what happened and what I was doing when the crash happened.

I have noted that since removing the corrupted files and recreating the database that comicrack is back to using an excessive amount of cpu and ram within a very short period of time after launching it. Average cpu use now is around 48-49% (from launch to close) and average cpu use starts on launch around 498 megs and increases over time (within about an hour of use) to 2.5 gigs of ram (on a 6 gig system with a 9 gig page file in use as recommended with system managed paging file default settings). I've had this issue in the past with cr using a very large amount of ram and I can't remember what settings you suggested I change to fix that (although I do remember posting about it and you suggesting a setting change(s) that did help me to bring the ram usage to a lower and more stable amount) I don't remember seeing the cpu usage stay as high as I have lately at any point and it's possible I have other corrupt files that I haven't found (as my collection managed by comicrack is actually pretty large with well over 100,000 digital comic files it may take me a while to find any other corrupted files).

removing the corrupted comics has only helped so much honestly. I'm still seeing (on average) around 5-10 crashes a day lately although luckily twice yesterday when comicrack crashed it actually opened up the correct dialog box asking if I wanted to submit the crash data to you (cyo) which of course I chose to do. I have had numerous crashes since and several times it's stated my database became corrupted due to the crashing and has forced me to reload an older database (with the notation that I'm of course losing data and will have to re-add the missing data). I've gotten to the point where i'm saving about every half hour (doing a full backup of my database) as I have no idea when it's going to crash.

I keep checking back here hoping that you'll read this cyo and maybe give me some tips or suggestions although so far I am the only person posting in this thread...

Perhaps updating to .net 3.5, if you do not already have it, will fix the problem...

I'm actually running the 3.51 version of the microsoft .NET software on the computer this is happening on. Due to that it can't be the .NET software causing the issues (I don't know that for sure of course).

Just an update here while I was checking in to see if cyo (or anyone else) replied or had any ideas I could try to use to fix the issues i've been having the last few weeks with comicrack.

I have switched my operating system (running a dual boot system atm) from vista 64 to win7 64. I'm still having the same problems with comicrack that I was before.

If I remove my database comicrack opens up fine although before completing a scan (on either os) it crashes after a few hours (a full scan of my library generally takes 30 hours or more). It doesn't crash at the same place each time where it crashes on scanning seems fairly random. The last listed comic on screen generally checks out fine with no corruption of any type. On the Vista 64 boot comicrack will not send out any data when it crashes (except to microsoft). On the Win7 boot comicrack sometimes (about 1/3 of the time) sends data about the crash to wherever it sends it (I assume to cyo).

I've noticed that on win7 when doing a scan and stopping the scan that comicrack won't allow me to initiate the scan again (i can click the scan button but it won't actually start scanning until I quit comicrack and restart it). Sometimes (not consistent which is odd) when I reload comicrack and start it scanning again if I stop it mid scan and then exit (to save my database) it quits extremely quickly and doesn't actually add what has been scanned into the database. I don't know that this has anything to do with the crashing but noticed it the last few days and thought it was odd enough it should be reported.

The last bug I wanted to report that i've noticed is that when you remove comicrack (using uninstall in the windows control panel). It leaves behind all the cYo folders (in users/<Your Account>/appdata/local and users/<Your Account>/appdata/roaming). I found this out after trying to remove comicrack completely and reinstall a fresh copy to see if that fixed the issues I have been having lately (it didn't).
