TOPIC: Comick Rack is using huge amounts of memory.
Comick Rack is using huge amounts of memory. 1 year, 6 months ago #8940

This just started or at least I just noticed it today. I can open comic rack and everything works fine for about 10 minutes. After that is slows down to a crawl as does my PC in general. I check task manager and comic rack is using between 1 and 3 gig of my memory. I only have 4 gig so it slows my pc down considerably. If I completely close CR my PC goes back to normal but 10 minutes after I start it again same thing.

well, there must be some serious memory leak... do you use latest ComicRack version? Do you have large library?
you can limit memory usage by editing ComicRack.ini file in C:\Program Files\ComicRack\ Find the line: ; LimitMemory = 50 Uncomment it (by deleting the semicolon ; ) and change the value to what seems right, i'd suggest 300-400 MB. |

On 64 bit with 8 GB of memory and a fairly large library ComicRack uses about 400 MB memory (note that all these factors play into how much memory ComicRack uses. On machines with less memory it should use less).
Such a memory leak as described above is to big to go unnoticed. I do actually not know what is going on on your machine. |

Well I am glad to say that I found the cause. It seems strange that it showed up now 3 weeks after what I did to cause it but here is what happened. 3 weeks ago I tried to run the find gaps in series on my whole library. That is 13,500 books. This obviously didn't work well and forced me to close comic rack. I tried to edit the smart list but it locked up again. I then just ignored the list and everything seemed to work fine until today. After my initial post I started checking settings and playing with different things. After a fresh restart things were running smooth and I started looking at my smart lists as soon as I clicked on that one it slowed down. I tried to edit the list and comic crack crashed. I actually had to uninstall the script and then it would let me into the list to edit or as I did delete it.
The thing I don't understand is why this started to impact me while I was just in my library updating random books. In any case I have been running smoothly for the last couple hours never using more than 300 MB. |

Hey, just out of curiosity, if memory usage will scale up with system RAM (assuming a library big enough to NEED that much memory usage) is there any cap on how high it will scale? IE "ComicRack by design will never use more than X memory". Just curious, mostly because I spend my days playing around with Win7 machines packing RAM in the double digits at work now. |

Using CVS, I can make CR use a huge chunk of memory (like 1.5/1.8Go) if I fetch loads of infos without closing CR. Doesn't bother me though since I've more than enough RAM to handle this.

This is still some memory leak in the scraper and/or python engine.

Just curious, mostly because I spend my days playing around with Win7 machines packing RAM in the double digits at work now. .NET has a garbage collection memory system. So the GC chooses how much and when to free. As I've written multiple times. The best memory allocation system is not the one that keeps most memory free, but makes the application the fastest. Free memory buys you nothing (except a good feeling when watching some system gauges). |
